What is Shou Sugi Ban?
Shou Sugi Ban, also known as Yakisugi, is a method of charring wood, specifically cedar, to increase its durability and enhance its natural beauty. This ancient technique involves carefully burning the surface of the wood to create a unique and striking finish. At Alabama Sawyer, we use pine instead of cedar, because that is more plentiful in our region, as well as available in the larger sizes desired by our customers for our most popular designs, the Hyo table and the Beam Bench.
How is it Done?
To create Shou Sugi Ban, the wood is first carefully charred using a torch or open flame. The charred layer is then wire brushed off, revealing the wood's natural grain and texture. Finally, the wood is treated with an oil or sealant to preserve the finish. Traditionally, the sealer is an oil. We have found that our customers are not interested in the maintenance required for an oil finish. Please note, even a urethane finish, especially if it is outside or exposed, needs regular attention and maintenace.
