One of the more drawn out stages has been deciding on the name and developing the branding. Should it be a sub brand or not? After numerous iterations, we landed on “Sawyer” and stuck with the Alabama Sawyer mark and simply named the model of the guitar. That name is Model A, B and so on… As relieved as we were with that launch box checked, this still left us with where to and how to put the branding on the guitar.
It might sound simple at first, but even with an existing logo, there are endless possibilities. I am happy to report, we are 90% there. We used custom stickers with the Alabama Sawyer logo on a clear base to help determine how to mark the guitars. After printing the logo and type at various sizes and honing in on our preferences, we ordered small runs in various sizes and came up with this! The final product will be a transfer.
The sticker solution came in a roundabout way, where the answer was right in front of my face. We like to add a little extra delight when we ship our small products, like our compost bins, rolling pins and cutting boards, for the simple reason—who doesn’t like stickers? For an inexpensive, promotional item, stickers fall pleasantly in the venn diagram of branding, function, fun and FREE gifts, aka “swag.”
A simple 3” round custom sticker with our logo on the outside of a standard off the shelf box lets us brand our shipments for a fraction of the cost or commitment of a custom made shipping box. Our products are not all the same size and we change our assortment of drops and evergreen home accessories. An adaptable way to brand our boxes is important in order to stay nimble in our small business.
When Cliff and I ordered bumper stickers for our cars, we figured our close friends and family would take one. Instead, we found that our employees were asking if they could take one for their own cars—company culture!
We used the custom magnet item as an add-on for the Noaway Countertop Compost Bin, to remind folks to take the compost out to the yard. We are able to contribute to the success of a non smelly compost situation and our logo is on 100s of refrigerators. A reminder holding up other reminders.
We used the vinyl letter transfers as semi-permanent signage around the office. We share the building we are in with another manufacturer. The way finding is helpful for the UPS man and our customers.
We love to send coasters as follow up gifts for our furniture customers. I can’t tell you how many emails I get after a delivery that say “We love our new table! How do I take care of it?” The answer is, first and foremost, coasters!”
The Sticker Mule platform is user-friendly, proofing is quick, standard lead times are fast and shipping is free. The deals that pop-up in my inbox are often irresistible. I never knew I wanted a holographic Alabama Sawyer sticker to throw into shipments or have available at the door, but people LOVE them!
We have been buying from Sticker Mule for years, so when we were going in circles (no pun intended) of how to test the branding for the Sawyer guitars, I was excited and relieved to use a trusted source.
A limited run of the guitars are slated to be ready by the holidays this year.
You can check out custom stickers on Sticker Mule.]]>Here's an easy tip. Before you add vegetable cuttings to your Noaway Countertop Compost Bin: Make Vegetable Stock!
Vegetable stock ready to use in the fridge works for soups, grains and tons of recipes.
Stock not only brings tremendously concentrated flavor to any dish, it is also the way to turn scraps that might otherwise go to waste into a delicious, versatile, and long-lasting super ingredient.
Excess aromatic vegetables or vegetables that are on their last legs like celery cores, slightly wilted carrots, or that random half an onion, stashed in the fridge, but never finished. Stock is also a great way to use parts of vegetables that you don’t normally cook with, like leek greens, celery tops, scallion roots, garlic nubs, tomato seeds and fennel fronds. Not everyone likes onion skins and carrot peels in stock as they may not add a ton of flavor, but I save and use it all. The final call is up to you!
Onions, carrots, celery, garlic, leeks, fennel, mushrooms, thyme, parsley. NOTE: Avoid cruciferous veggies like cabbage or brussels sprouts as they can result in a bitter stock.
I keep my replacement compost bin insert in the fridge for the vegetables and cuttings I plan to use in a batch of vegetable both.

Though wood is far more eco-friendly in most forms than plastics or other materials, some forms are simply better than others in terms of what it can create or do for the environment. Here’s a look at a few of the most important components of your next buying decision.
Reclaimed wood is one type of eco-friendly wood you could purchase. It's not a new concept, as the reuse of wood like this has been done for centuries. In short, this wood has been used for some other purpose in the past and is now being reused for a new purpose. It could have been wood that comes from an old barn or from a packing crate that’s transformed into a new use.
You can purchase reclaimed wood in various ways. There are some distributors that focus just on this type of wood sale, harvesting and gathering wood from various sources for the purpose of reusing it for something new and unique. Reclaimed wood used for the creation of furniture is a bit harder to find, but you can find retailers who offer these pieces.
Reclaimed wood is the easiest way to be sustainable when it comes to making eco-friendly decisions simply because no additional trees are harvested. Still, there are some pros and cons you should know about this type of wood.
There are some great benefits that come from using reclaimed wood for your next project, such as:
There are a few potential drawbacks to using reclaimed wood, such as:
Another type of wood worthy of consideration is urban wood, and we find it to be one of the best options for those who want to be as sustainable as possible.
Urban wood is newly milled wood that comes from trees located in urban settings. This type of wood is nearly always slated for the landfill unless someone takes the time to salvage it and use it for a new project. If a tree falls over into a roadway during a storm, the city cleans it up by removing that wood and disposing of it in a landfill. Urban lumber is an alternative solution for that wood.
There are a number of potential benefits to using urban lumber in your projects, but a few things you should consider before doing so as well.
The use of urban lumber, or buying furniture made from urban lumber, offers a few key benefits:
While urban wood furniture offers some exciting benefits, there are a few cons to keep in mind as well:
Urban wood can be competitively priced, often graded as #2 in local lumber yards. Most often, the price is comparable to traditional lumber, including FSC certified wood.
The hard part is finding this type of wood. Sourcing it within a few hundred miles is often best. There are some smaller lumber yards that specialize in it or turn to a wood furniture creator that specializes in it.
The life cycle of a tree is complex, but it often lends itself to either a storm or another incident causing the tree to fall over, a disease in the wood, or simply old age that leads to rotting. The key is what happens next. Urban wood can be used for many things.
You can be a part of the tree’s life story. To do so, simply seek out urban wood furniture and bring it into your home.
These are three different types of wood:
Some of the most common types of domestic wood include:
Using domestic wood is important:
Some examples of exotic woods include:
A few key things to keep in mind:
The term certified wood refers to wood that’s obtained from responsibly managed forested areas. There are various organizations that certify that these practices are being followed.
Some of the benefits of using certified wood include the following:
There could be some drawbacks:
From salvaged wood furniture to custom designed urban wood furniture, Alabama Sawyer has made a point to ensure we do what we can to support the forests around us. A big part of that is simply knowing where our wood comes from. Take the time to learn more about our story to find out how we source wood.
Why does it matter where your wood tables come from? There are many reasons, but at the heart of this is climate change. As the ecosystem suffers damage, it impacts agriculture and the health of the environment as a whole. More so, choosing eco-friendly wood means you are not contributing to the problem. There’s less pollution because the wood isn’t being transported across long distances, and the local ecosystems are being protected. Proper propagation of tree species also helps to support a diverse ecosystem that helps to balance health and wellbeing. Take the time to learn where your wood is really coming from before you buy.

More so, urban wood is closer to home, which means there is minimal transportation involved in obtaining the wood, further cutting down on the creation of carbon emissions from the crafting of a table. ]]>Let’s start with some basics about charcuterie. Charcuterie pronunciation isn’t always simple. Try this: shaar-koo-tr-ee. You can also say it as shahr-ku-tuh-ree.
So, what is it? In short, it is a type of culinary art form. It’s a way of displaying bite-sized foods on a wooden board or table. Typically, it includes meats, cheeses, fruits, nuts, and crackers, but there are endless variations to it. You can create one that fits any taste you have, and with a bit of help, you can even customize them as holiday characterize boards.
Charcuterie is a French term to describe processed meat products. In Italian, this is called salumi. While the terms are the same, the types of foods and items placed on these boards can range widely, with French or Italian products. Keep in mind that today, charcuterie is widely used in the U.S. to represent more than just French or Italian meats and cheeses.
Start with the right board, like a live edge charcuterie board. This is the foundation for your display, and you want it, in itself, to be beautiful and even unique. Any size works based on the number of people you are planning to serve. You'll also need a few serving plates, toothpicks, and napkins, along with spoons and forks on the board to help people serve themselves.
Now that you have the setup let's talk about what goes on the average charcuterie plate. First, remember that this is not necessarily a meal, and you do not need to portion out the foods. Rather, you are encouraging your guests to help themselves, which means they choose what they want to enjoy. Most of the time, there are some specific items on these boards (and you'll want a large enough variety to meet most people's needs). Here are some common items you should offer to guests:
When choosing each of these items, be sure to look for specific products that work for any theme you are creating. Or just choose the types that you love and want to use.
Start with the cheeses. You will want to choose those that offer some variety since most people are particular about the types of cheeses they will use. Try to have three options that come in various forms, such as a soft cheese they can cut, a few slices of cheese to fit the cracker, and some that can be broken off.
Herbs can be an excellent way to add a bit of spice to any plate, but they also work well as a way to add some green color to the board. Add a few sprigs of parsley, rosemary, or basil to your board. They can add fragrance to it as well, helping to elevate the look and feel.
You have a lot of options when it comes to meats. Try to elevate the quality and selection of meats to match the type of event. Some great choices include:
Next, add some fruit for a bit of sweetness. The cheese and meats typically create a lot of salt, so the sweetness of dried and fresh fruit works well here.
You can choose any type of fruit that works for your theme, with berries being one of the easiest and best options overall. You can also add some small peppers (like pepperoncini) and artichoke hearts to give it more of a hearty feel.
Next, place your dried fruits, nuts, and jams on the open spaces of your board. You’ll want to ensure you’re filling in as many openings on the charcuterie board as you can.
Choose easy to eat nuts, like almonds and pistachios, though there’s no limitation on the type of nuts you can use. Be sure to choose several types to create a blend of options for guests.
Next, you need something for people to put these meats and cheeses on, and crackers tend to be the best option. You can choose a range of flavors, such as those with a bit of a peppery bite or mild, simple crackers. Choose options in various styles and shapes.
With a cutting board in hand, you can make a charcuterie board for just about any holiday. That includes everything from Valentine’s Day to Halloween. Make them for kids or adults, or both. Here are some tips for a few.
The best holiday charcuterie is Thanksgiving because it is a great way to bring people together and show thanks. Here are some ways to make this board special:
For Thanksgiving, try to use hearty, more harvest-focused items. You can place sausages and cheeses that offer more of a robust, earthy taste to them.
For Halloween, you’ll want to be sure you get some fun colors and themes going. You can use a variety of items to decorate. Here are a few tips:
Being creative with decorating these boards is a must. For a more elegant version, look for fruits, veggies, and cheeses that are darker in color or orange.
For Christmas, think about the shape and the items on these boards based on what you love the best. Here are some ideas:
For Hanukkah, aim for foods that are more common in the Jewish culture. Here are some simple options to consider:
You can add a few kinds of cheese cut into the shape of a star to this board, too. Nuts and crackers help to fill in the spaces.
New Years Eve tends to be the type of event where people spend a good amount of time snacking, so these boards tend to be a bit more robust. Consider a variety of options, such as those with meats and others with sweets. Here are some tips:
Keep the summer theme the main focus of this type of board. Here are some great ways to make it happen:
Make it personalized! For the best birthday charcuterie board, you’ll always want to focus on things the birthday person loves.
A Charcuterie board is the perfect gift for a 5th anniversary. Have it engraved with the couple's name and their wedding date. Then, dress it up with fine cheeses, meats, and even some wine for an intimate evening alone.
It’s possible to make any holiday board special if you consider all of the options available to you.
]]>The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 was a large, far-reaching law that made $300 billion in investments designed to specifically target the climate crisis. That includes steps to reduce food waste in the U.S. Specifically, the program puts money into the National Resource Conservation Service’s Conservation programs. These programs are designed to target key areas of concern, such as reducing soil erosion and increasing wildlife habitat. It is also designed to improve water quality and better manage agricultural producers.
When considering climate change and food waste, there’s more than just the food that’s being tossed out. It’s also a waste of all of the water, transportation-related greenhouse gas production, and the increase in the amount of material in landfills. Food itself will deteriorate, but the packaging and all of the fossil fuels used to plant, grow, and harvest that food cannot be restored to the planet. That is what makes this type of effort so important. Consider that as food decomposes in a landfill, it releases greenhouse gases, specifically methane. Methane traps 80 times the amount of heat on the planet and creates carbon dioxide.
The Inflation Reduction Act does not mention food waste reduction outright, but it does provide some resources to help organizations to stop wasting and improve the recycling of these products.
The law also has other components important for the reduction of risks to the planet. For example, the biogas industry, which works to collect and convert methane from waste streams and turns it into renewable natural gas, will get a boost from tax credits, putting it on a more level ability to get financial support as the solar industry does.
One of the ways this law could help to support food reduction is by moving more money away from landfill management and putting it into the process of composting. With composting, the food waste products are broken down properly and then reintroduced to the soil, allowing the nutrients from within those scraps to feed the next generation of crops.
Composting facilities can significantly reduce the amount of food product that ends up in landfills. In doing so, it will create more jobs and help to reduce the amount of material being added to landfills that end up creating methane gas. California already has a program in place to help promote composting programs like this.
The law provides $21 billion to the USDA for conservation programs. This could include the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. This program in itself is quite fantastic because it allows farmers to be incentivized to conserve national resources through the improvement of their operations.
That includes the use of food waste reduction through compost application. Though the USDA is still working to create a soil carbon amendment conservation practice that outlines the specific process and guidelines for it, the use of nutrient-rich food scraps in agricultural applications simply makes sense. It provides numerous benefits, including simply putting nutrients right back in the soil so the soil can help to grow new plants.
Composting allows for the microbial breakdown in food products or all organic matter. These components can then be used to fertilize the soil. When fertilizing soil like this, there is no need to use chemicals to boost nutrient levels. Today, there are many people who are working on composting, both at the industrial and commercial levels, as well as in homes.
Many cities are working to implement composting programs. These programs range widely in what they do and how they work, but they typically enable the collection of food scraps to keep them from ending up in landfills. In areas like New York, there are programs in place and companies managing the entire process, such as picking up food waste curbside to allow for those food scraps to be properly composted and returned to the soil.
Other organizations are working directly with commercial clients. This includes grocery stores and restaurants that end up with a large amount of food scraps on a daily basis. There is also the need for composting to occur at the industrial level, where food is processed. Large-scale composting like this can handle a large amount of organic waste, providing the planet with one of the biggest overall impacts in food waste reduction.
In many of these commercial and industrial applications, the food scraps collected are turned into compost material that is then sold to farms and nurseries so that the nutrient-rich material can then be used to create improved soils.
The establishment of industrial composting and commercial-level composting overall is a community-wide effort. Though there are many areas that are doing this, working right alongside garbage and recycling agencies to collect products at curbs, residential composting is very much an important part of the process. It is something that people can do right at home.
How can you become more eco-friendly at home? Composting may not seem like something you need to do until you try it out and see just how much food waste and scraps, along with other organic material, you have to toss out. There are many steps that you, as a residential family, can take to create a big impact.
Find out if programs exist in your area
Large-scale composting is going to have the most significant impact. You can do your part in helping to encourage this by working with your city to implement a food waste collection process. This process does not typically get underway until citizens begin encouraging their council person to take action. Many recycling companies can facilitate it, or local companies may be available to help put the program in place with citywide support.
If you have a flower garden or even a vegetable garden, it is easy to reap the benefits of composting. To do so, start by collecting your food waste. That includes any type of non-animal food waste, like the rinds of your fruits and peels from your bananas. You can also include dried egg shells you’ve washed. Collect these items and then transport them to an outside composting bin. This is a larger bin that you can line with twigs and straw, along with all of your organic material. It’s rotated over time to encourage the breakdown of the material.
You can then use this material in your garden. It does not have to be difficult to do so – just add it into the soil and mix – to reuse it. Take the time to read about different ways to create and use a compost bin like this.
One of the most common concerns for many people is having a way to collect and store their food waste products before they add them to a composting bin. Instead of tossing them into a trash can where they will end up on the curb, consider this process.
This makes it effortless for you to collect your food scraps so they can go to work helping the planet. It’s that easy!
At Alabama Sawyer, we offer our Best Seller, Countertop Compost Bin – Noaway. It is the ideal tool for those who want to be more eco-friendly but also want to be sure they are making the process easy to manage. It is also one of the best ways to add a bit of elegance to your kitchen countertops.
This countertop compost bin is made of solid wood and can hold all of your organic waste products within the stainless steel interior container that's held within it. This lightweight container enables you to easily take your collected food particles to your compost bin outdoors for gardening use and wash the container with ease, even in the dishwasher.
This compost bin is beautiful, and it is also doing its part to support environmentally friendly change. That's because it's made from urban wood, which is wood that's salvaged from downed trees within urban forests in the cities. This process keeps this wood out of landfills and allows it to instead become a beautiful component of your home.
Play your role in composting. Start the process at home and then encourage your family and friends to do the same. Make sure you vote for climate change actions that help your community and the country around you to protect the planet.
]]>Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights. It is an eight-day event celebrated in the winter months that involves the lighting of the menorah, one light for each day, enjoying in special prayers, and enjoying foods, specifically fried foods. In 2022, it will run from December 18 to December 26.
The traditions stem from the second century BCE when the people of Israel were being forced by the Syrian-Greeks to accept the Greek culture and belief system. A small group of faithful Jews defeated one of the most powerful armies and drove the Greek forces from the Holy Land.
During the eight days, there are various practices and traditions followed, including specific prayers and the lighting of the menorah.
There are a number of highly traditional foods enjoyed during this celebration. Here’s a look at some of the most popular.
Latkes are a type of potato pancake. They are fried in oil in the tradition of using oil for most cooking during this holiday as a way to pay homage to the oil available in the Holy Land.
Brisket is a very popular option for Jewish celebrations. There are various types, but Jewish brisket is braised rather than cooked on a grill or in a smoker. It often is served with vegetables as well.
Kugel is a popular Jewish noodle dish that is served during this time. It can be made in various ways, often as a sweet version or one that is more savory. Sweet versions often include sugar and cinnamon, often with raisins. Savory versions may have onions and garlic in them.
Take a look at some of the recipes you may wish to add to your table this year.
This pumpkin rugelach with sage and walnuts is a unique combination of savory and sweet. Though pumpkin is not traditional, it adds a bit of fall spice and flavor to the dish and makes these little handheld treats a bit more special. The sage, on the other hand, is very much a commonly used herb in dishes like this.
For some, Hanukkah churros are one of the best ways to add some interest and spice to this Festival of Lights. They are fried, which fits right into the theme of the foods often consumed during this period. The churros themselves are not traditional (most often, donuts are served), but this is a great way to add something unique. You can fill them with jam, or you can dip them into a sauce for a bit of a different experience.
Hearty, warm dishes are a common choice during this time, and smokey fried chickpeas are a good way to create that flavor. This dish combines a Moroccan and Spanish flavor to the meal, creating a bit of spice and crunch while at it. With lemon, thyme, paprika, and other flavorings, it is quite a special treat.
One of the most important parts of this holiday season is the sharing and continued passing down of traditions. Each one of them follows a pattern that has passed from one generation to the next since the second century BCE. Here is a look at some of the most notable that many families continue to celebrate.
In each household, the menorah is lit one candle at a time and then placed in the doorway or in a window. In addition to this, special Hallel prayers are said in addition to the prayers already said each day. Alabama Sawyer offers a beautiful, hand-made menorah ideal for those looking for something special to give.
It is a common component of Hanukkah for Jewish people to eat fried foods. Because a portion of this festival celebrates the miracle that a single container of oil was able to meet the needs of Jewish people in the Holy Land for 8 days instead of just one, it is very common for this celebration to focus on including foods fried in oil. That includes jelly-filled sufganiyah or donuts, latkes, and others.
Dreidel is a type of game played during this time of the year by many Jewish families. It is a top that has four sides to it that have Hebrew letters on them. The letters say, in Hebrew, "a great miracle happened there."
During the game, a pot of coins or other items is presented. The dreidel is spun, and depending on the letter it lands on, a person wins or loses.
Though many people today celebrating Hanukkah do so by giving gifts, it is more traditional to give gelt. Gelt is a term used to represent gifts of money. These are often given to children during the Festival of Lights. It may be given, for example, for devotion to the study of the Torah or because of good behavior. The goal is, in part, to help encourage the giving of charity to others.
Over the years, the traditions have changed significantly. Today, many families give small gifts on each day of the Festival of Lights. It is a way for them to honor the child who behaves well or to show thanks.
There is nothing more special than family traditions. These Hanukkah traditions are some of the best. If you want to reinvigorate your beliefs, start with this festival. You can purchase our beautiful menorah to help you to start telling stories and sharing the traditions with your family. It is a finely crafted, unique piece that, itself, is likely to be passed down from one generation to the next in your family.

One of the ways to best understand what type of function a wood product can offer is by looking at the hardness scale. Specifically, the Janka wood hardness scale is a tool we can use to determine how a specific type of urban hardwood can be for a project.
The Janka wood hardness scale is a range of numbers that compare the hardness of any type of wood with other wood products like it. It also provides us with some information about if the wood will suffer from dings or dents when used or what type of wear we can expect from it once it is put into place. In short, it gives us a better idea of how the wood will withstand the environment and the function it is put into once crafted into the desired look.
The Janka hardness test helps to measure the resistance of the wood to wear and denting. Specifically, the numbers on the scale represent the force that is necessary to put an 11.28 millimeter diameter steel ball halfway into the piece of wood. Sounds pretty crazy for sure, but this creates a standard to allow other types of wood to be measured. The higher the number is, the more resistant the wood is to wear and dents.
Urban wood is beautiful and refined. Numerous types of wood can be incorporated into urban wood furnishings. That means there's no telling the type of characteristics you will find in grain patterns, features, and overall quality. Some things to consider when choosing this type of wood include the following. Keep in mind that often these concerns add character and beauty to the wood.
Wood coloring and streaking may differ in urban wood compared to natural forested wood of the same species. That may be due to factors such as light exposure, weather exposure, and overall age. This may lead to a darkening or greying of the wood. Mineral stain can also be a factor that often creates an olive to greenish black coloring, sometimes discoloration that seems more blue or brown in color as well. It is often due to bird pecking, some type of root damage, as well as mechanical damage.
Urban wood comes from a variety of environments. It is possible that there could be some contaminants within that wood, but all wood products can be screened to ensure there is no damage to the strength of integrity. Urban wood is more likely to have some contaminants, like fence wire, nails, or other items within it.
The natural durability of wood will differ from one tree to the next. Most of the time, younger trees are not as durable as older trees. Overall, naturally durable woods tend to last longer and are the preferred option for projects as a result. They may be less likely to decay quickly, and they may also be less at risk for insects. These woods tend to be ideal, then for furniture.
Take a look at the woods found in Alabama and their hardness scale. A harder wood tends to be best suited for the creation of furniture, but there are a lot of species that could be used nonetheless.

Is wood grown in a natural forest different from that which is grown in the city? There have been various studies that look at these factors, and there's not a huge difference in terms of the wood quality. However, this also depends on the species and the location. Here are some things you may notice.
Selecting wood furniture for the way it looks is always a good plan, but you can do even more with it. Urban wood furniture is simply the better option for the planet. Just consider some of the key benefits it offers:
Urban wood furniture is simply beautiful. There are many benefits to choosing urban lumber for your next project. The first is that this wood often comes from old trees that have beautiful grain patterns and colors. Often, they can be woods that are hard to find in lumber form anywhere else.
It's also locally sourced, which means you do not have to worry about the high cost associated with (and often tacked on) the cost of the wood purchase. Also, you're using a heritage material. That means that wood has been a part of the community, likely for a hundred years or longer. That makes it valuable historically. Finally, this is a renewable source, unlike plastics.
Take a look at our furniture gallery at Alabama Sawyer. Check out all of the beautiful pieces we offer and pick those to which you hope to give a home to.
]]>The actual properties depend on pine to pine. Some are hard, others soft. The longleaf pine has reddish-brown heartwood and yellowish-white sapwood. The texture of pine wood is fine to medium, while the grain is straight. The wood is moderately resistant to decay.
The main benefits of pine wood are:
Pine wood is used in high-value carpentry items like window frames, furniture, floors, and paneling. Thanks to the light color, pinewood gets along with other furnishings in interior décor. While not as strong as oak, pinewood is still durable. Plus, it's an affordable and widely available wood material.

When choosing record storage, consider what’s most important. That generally means ensuring it is sturdy and able to hold up to the weight of the records. You also want to ensure it can hold as many records as you have, or you have room for more than one storage option. You also want to be able to easily page through and see what you have in your collection. That means it should be easy to use.
It’s a good idea to ensure anything you buy for vinyl storage is going to prevent your records from warping or having any type of permanent damage to them. Consider the space you have to store them, the number of additional records you may wish to buy, and just how accessible you want your storage options to be. There’s a lot to think about when it comes to purchasing quality vinyl storage.
One of the options you have is solid storage. That is, choose individual record displays. There are a wide range of items that can be created just for your needs, including pieces that can help to showcase and display your records. Solid storage options could include shelves placed along walls in your entertainment space.
One option is to use a sleek, beautiful solid wood floating shelf. Choose the color and wood type you like. Position it right over the coach or near your entertainment center where you keep your record player. Choosing something like our urban wood solid wood floating shelf is ideal. It gives you lots of space perfectly suited for displaying your records. Create a stack of them, and then pull out a few of your favorites to use as art on your walls.
Or select a cabinet that can display each of your pieces perfectly. Our Max Credenza is the perfect solution for vinyl record storage. With several blocks, you can stack your records within to allow for a sleek, easy to manage way to maintain your records. Position a few on top to add artwork to your living space.
When it comes to creating a display area for your records, you need to make the most use of the space you have. Often, you won't have a large room to spread out your designs. When choosing them, be sure to select pieces that fit within your space. Records are larger and require bigger pieces of storage material to keep them protected.
If you have very specific dimensions, it could be hard to find the perfect piece for you to fit snuggly into that area. Consider the space you have to dedicate to your vinyl storage, along with the amount of space you need for the number of records you have. Then, reach out to Alabama Sawyer. We can create a custom-designed piece in the dimensions you need and offer recommendations for urban wood, various coloring, and styles to fit just about any need.
Another way to make the best use of your space is to select modular storage. Modular simply means you can configure the individual features in a way that works for your space. You can turn something simple into something beautiful. Rainbow City Cubes are one of our best solutions in modular modern wood pieces for homes. These are the perfect size for your vinyl records. You can stack them together in various ways, such as in a pyramid shape, one on top of the other, or use them in various areas of the home on their own. They work very well for a fun modular look.
Another key consideration for your vinyl record storage is how the pieces will sit within that space. For example, a strong, sturdy cabinet can do well on its own as a solid, free-standing piece. When it is built to hold the weight and type of items you put into it, it will create a better result. If you want something you can move easily, this is the type of fixture to look for in most cases.
Built-in storage isn't something to ignore. It's built into the walls or other areas of the home to create a more refined look. You can create built-in pieces near your record player, for example, to easily store your vinyl.
Think about how much of an impression you want your records to play within the room you’ve selected. For example, many vinyl covers are fascinating and truly beautiful pieces of artwork. For that reason, you may want to consider wall mounted record display options. This way, each of your pieces becomes a component of the art in that space.
Cabinet storage is also ideal for some spaces. If you have a lot of records and you want a significant amount of storage, cabinet storage is typically the best route to take. An open-faced piece, like our Walker Bookcase, can work well in many areas. This is the type of modern shelving unit that allows you to have a simple, easy to access way to manage your items.
While you may be looking at function, also consider what the pieces are made from. Here are some examples.
Urban hardwood is our preference for many reasons. Not only is this stunning, beautiful wood, but it is also an eco-friendly thing to do. We reclaim wood from urban forests that's already owned and would otherwise end up in a landfill for these pieces. The wood is in pristine condition, often with beautiful grain patterns. The quality is impossible to beat.
In some situations, you may want to include metal like steel into your vinyl storage option. If you have an urban feel to your space and want to capitalize on that super modern appeal, this is an excellent route to take.
We always encourage our clients to check out American made products whether you buy from us or another crafter. You cannot beat the beauty, and the refined elegance of American made wood items. Just check out all of our products to see what we mean.

Modern organic is a superior, beautiful solution that's right for any type of living space. It works well with most other materials, in numerous colors, and with designer spaces where elegance and charming details matter. The organic appeal helps it work with most other materials, too.
Don’t overlook the investment in an eco-friendly storage solution. We highly recommend the aesthetics and style of a vinyl record credenza, like our max Credenza, that’s designed for your records specifically. Choose the wood type and watch us create something perfectly fitting for your elegant, upscale, or even more relaxed space.

]]>Why?
Consider whether or not an entryway bench or even a mudroom bench could work well for your space. Having a bench here could offer a few key benefits for you.
A simple bench here isn't just a place to sit to put on shoes, though. It creates harmony and organization for your home. You may be able to tuck a few baskets under the bench to store gloves and scarves. Or use this space as an area to sit and wait for a friend to pull up to start your team. More so, in some homes, it can help to welcome people in, providing a first impression of what the rest of the home's spaces will look like.
When it comes to choosing the right mudroom bench, there are a few options to consider. Always choose a bench that works for your family. If you have smaller children, having a shorter bench works well. Many times, a small entry bench can be a lifesaver for a parent tying shoelaces. On the other hand, you can choose those that are 15 inches or higher. Another option is to choose a made for size bench – have it custom designed to fit your specific needs.
When it comes to finding the perfect seating for your space, there are a lot of things to think about – size, color, and features. One additional factor is whether or not the wood bench is eco-friendly. That matters to many people not only because it adds beauty and value to the home but because this bench is protecting the environment, even if on just a small scale. At Alabama Sawyer, you'll find these beautiful benches to be exactly what you need and want. Here are some examples.
The Miyake Seating option is perhaps one of the best overall choices for its beauty and simple design. It can easily blend into any type of setting, creating a stunning look but also being highly functional. It features floating dovetail joints along with a beautiful urban timber grain to it. It looks like a piece of art, but it is quite functional for all those needs you have walking in the door. The Asian-style joinery of the wood bench helps to elevate its style and elegance, allowing you to easily move it from one area of the home to another when there’s a need for a bit more seating.
The Evolve Bench is the go-it-all bench. There’s ample room here for everything from a stack of books that needs to go back to the library to ample seating for all of the kids at once (imagine not fighting!) It's also beautiful with expressive wood joinery that helps to coordinate with the solid urban timber grain. It has more of a simple look and is more refined than other benches. Adding it to an entryway welcomes anyone to sit and relax for a moment. Even better, it can easily be a bonus coffee table when you need more space to spread out delectable treats for guests.
When it comes to creating the perfect seating, sometimes having a few extra times can help you. Here are 10.
A simple way to make room for a bench is to use the alcove. With custom sizing options, that’s easy to do!
Did you know that adding in a bench means your instantly creating storage under the bench? You can add a few baskets here or a simple shoe rack to keep things neat and tidy.
When creating your entryway space, ensure that the bench you include works well with the furniture in the adjacent room. That’s easy to do when choosing eco-friendly wood items for both spaces!
You don’t have to go with a basic wood tone. You can brighten things up with a pop of color or choose a white stained bench for a beautiful blank canvas.
You may not have room right inside the door for a bench, but if you have a set of steps with a small area underneath them, this makes for the perfect place to position a bench, and it's still close to the door.
If you don’t know how many people will actually sit on the bench, consider how it can be helpful other times, such as acting as a place to store items you or the kids need to take with you for the day, such as your bag.
You can make the bench a little less stark by working with the design team to create an upholstered finish. This is an excellent way to add a bit more warmth to the area. Or, you can always add a few stylish and beautiful pillows to the bench as well.
If people are going to stop and sit, give them something to look at on the bench. That could be beautiful décor on the wall (a stunning piece of art here looks fabulous) or even a few pictures of your loved ones. You can also add in other elements, such as a table next to it with a beautiful flower or an inspirational book, just in case you have time to relax.
You can paint and update the look of your bench with any color or style that you like. You may wish to do this by painting the bench to match the same wall color, which would allow it to blend into the space well. The bench does not have to be the focal point of your entryway unless you want it to be.
Be sure to paint your entryway bench in a way that allows it to work well in your space. It should not be an afterthought to your home’s color scheme but a compliment to it. Update it to be a piece that adds depth and color that works for your home’s beauty.
Let's give you some reasons to be a no-shoe house.
No one likes to spend a lot of time vacuuming, and when the dirt stops at the doorway, you don't have to!
Anything they bring in on their shoes stays in the entryway, no matter what toxins they are.
Less grime and less bacteria from who-knows-what-they-step-in can make your home a healthier place to live.
Many people walk through all sorts of chemicals. By taking the shoes off at the door, those chemicals don’t make it into your home.
Walking without shoes on in the home is better for your leg muscles and overall posture.
A cleaner home is one of peace and tranquility – why not help that along by encouraging no shoes in the home?
Many cultures believe that taking your shoes off helps to leave all of the bad energy of the day and the world outside of your home.
Having a home that’s clean means a lot to those who live there. It’s a sign of respect to take your shoes off to honor that.
Without a doubt, there's no better feeling than slipping out of your shoes after a very long day.
Without shoes on in the home, there are no worries about the sound of them racing down the hall or click-clacking on the wood floor.
Be sure to take some time to check out all of the options available to you from Alabama Sawyer. We know you want to sit down and relax with us.
]]>Sometimes the best way to find the perfect coffee tables for your living space is to have some inspiration. Whether you need the perfect place to serve your homemade pimento cheese to your guests when they arrive or a place to sprawl out with the kids on game night, the right table makes everything possible.
The first thing to consider when comparing the options available to you is to consider the scale of the table and how it relates to the rest of the room. If you have your furniture in place now, take some time to look at how it fits within the space. If you were to purchase a coffee table now and put it right into your current layout, how much room would it take up? Consider how you could sit around it or, in the case of a small coffee table, where would you position it to get the most use out of it?
Consider other pieces in the space along with the seat height – as that should be the ideal position for most tables.
Whether you want something that blends well with your sofa or you are looking for a statement piece, your coffee table can certainly add style and luxury to the room.
One of the best and most versatile options is to use wood species, or more specific than that, urban wood pieces. These are eco-friendly options that come from reclaimed wood from urban areas, wood that would otherwise end up in the dump. If you are considering this type of elegant option, find out where the wood came from.
Next, consider the look of it. Is it a round shape, which could work well in smaller areas, or a square? Do you want a multi-height table that can be adjusted or a single height? Also, consider whether storage within the table could add even more value to this space.
You have some outstanding ideas right now of what you may like. To help you with decision making, consider whether or not you want a single table for the living room or if you want several options.
A single table that dominates the seating area is quite common for many living room spaces. If you don't have a significant amount of room next to the sofa or in other areas, just one table may be enough for you. Here are some considerations.

They work well at the entryway, but you can easily tuck them next to the sectional for added table space.

Use them as the type of table that moves with your guests and needs – no matter where you need a simple and beautiful table.

The Beam Bench is a must more stately piece and takes up much of the space in your living room, but that is just why you need to use it. The Beam Bench is the perfect type of table for those areas where you want to put up a big display (like all of those collectibles you have tucked away) or to set up a small garden right in your living room. These are a narrow and backless bench that offers a nice natural look.
Tray on an Ottoman

This is a beautiful table that is perfect for you as you get set up to watch the big game – there’s ample room for a few drinks, snacks, and the gadgets you need to track your fantasy team – or the perfect table for those days when you’re working from home in your PJs.

You are certainly going to love having a place to set your drink as you put your feet up to stream your favorite shows, too. The only question is, which table will you select?
]]>Hickory is the hardest commercially available domestic hardwood. In fact, it’s five times harder than aspen, which is one of the soft hardwoods. This tree belongs to a walnut family and is prized for dense, hardwood as well as sweet syrupy sap and large delicious nuts.
]]>Hickory heartwood is usually light to medium brown but also has a reddish hue. On the other hand, sapwood is paler and yellowish-brown. Hickory, like pecan wood, has a straight or wavy grain. The texture of this wood is medium. Hickory wood responds well to steam-bending, and it also stains, glues, and finishes well.
Benefits of hickory wood are:
When it comes to interior design and typical uses for urban hickory, hickory wood is used for flooring and tool handles. It is primarily used where shock resistance and strength are important. Keep in mind due to the grain structure; hickory is more prone to shrinkage with humidity changes.
Hickory wood fun facts:
Well, the answer to that is, it depends. What you think is a farmhouse table and what we think are likely to be different. The best thing to know is that we offer some impressively beautiful wood tables, including many that fit into the realm of farmhouse style.
]]>It's easy enough to find a simple wood table. Yet, that doesn't make it a true farmhouse table. These tables bring nature indoors, and while they can be elegant, they are often beautifully rustic and charming due to their natural beauty. If you want to bring nature in, look for a table that looks like it was handcrafted just for your space.
If you want to enjoy this type of incredible work of art for your dining table, there are a few things to consider before you just choose one. The very best of them, like those sought after by an interior designer, can really set the tone for the home.
A farmhouse table is a big expanse of wood (though you can choose from various sizes). They are not likely to have a leaf in them to add more space to them, though. Rather, the table is more simplistic and rustic in nature without these types of elements. When choosing this type of dining table, be sure to select for the number of people you have, as you won't find it easy to add to these tables.
These are made from solid wood. Though a number of different wood types could be used, most of them are very heavy woods, which leads to a sturdy, highly durable table itself. As large, dominating tables, they create a statement within the room they are in. If you're looking for a table, you can move from one area to the next, this is not the right choice for you.
Most of the time, the dining room table will have an apron. This is an overhang over the top edge of the table. It adds dimension and character but also will need to be careful consideration when choosing chairs. Be sure the chairs are low enough that there's ample room for a person's legs under the apron. Some tables have a shorter apron than others, but most will have at least one.
As you consider investing in a table for your home, you want something that is fitting to your space. That is, don't choose just because it is trendy or stylish right now. A farmhouse table is the type of table that is always in style, thanks to the chunky, beautiful wood that makes it up. It works well in a traditional home where there is beautiful wood throughout, but it can also be an elegant addition to a stunning modern home, depending on the features of the table, including the type of wood, finishes, and features.
A modern farmhouse table may be made of reclaimed or salvaged urban wood that's painted a modern color or a simple clear finish. You may also find those that blend colors together or add in a bit of metal detailing. That helps to make them a good fit for a more modern interior design.
Yet, there’s no doubt the farmhouse look remains a popular one. It is easy to use in many styles and decors. You can make it your own.
One of the biggest decisions you need to make is the type of wood for your farmhouse table. The wood you choose will impact the overall cost, but also the design and features of the finished table. That’s why you want to be careful.
Softwoods tend to be a popular option for farmhouse tables for many reasons. This includes woods like pine, redwood, spruce, cedar, and juniper. Even better, choose reclaimed wood, wood that has been downed already, especially that which comes from urban development.
There are a few disadvantages to using softwood for furniture that you need to take into consideration. For example, some do not take stain well. For example, if you plan to use fir, it's not going to stain well and will maintain more of a natural hue. Not all softwoods are like that. Some softwoods also have a more coarse texture to them as well. They could also stain or discolor over time, but proper maintenance and care can reduce that risk.
It’s always a question that people ask, and with good reason. If you need a dining room table for 8 people, don’t settle for a table that doesn’t offer enough room for them. For 4 people, perhaps for a breakfast table, consider nothing smaller than a 4’ rectangular table. For those who are looking for a table for 6, don’t choose anything under 6’. For 8 people, you need 8’. What’s most important here is choosing what works for your space and your family’s needs.
If you are looking for a farmhouse table but you are not sure which to choose, consider these recommendations for your dining table. You are sure to find them nothing short of stunning.

For many people, purchasing wood furniture is the best way to add value and beauty to their home. Yet, not all tree to table woodworkers or salvaged wood sources create the same way, starting with the drying process. That’s why we work with a specific process.
Our process involves a careful selection process of trees that would otherwise end up in a landfill, chosen for their unique beauty and features.
We mill and dry logs to create the very best outcome. When you buy from us, you can expect exceptional results.
Where our wood comes from is important to us and our customers. We mill and dry our own wood for each wood product we sell. There are very specific steps for kiln drying that include sealing, stacking, and air-drying until the wood reaches a specific moisture point. Only at that point is the wood ready for the kiln.
As you learn more about our process, know that there are other providers who think air-drying is superior. We believe it is just one step in the process. We also see kiln drying as a necessary part of sterilizing the wood before it is used, as well as speeding up the process. That's why we put so much into this process. And, to be clear, our process is longer, and our tree concierge process takes more time. Here’s what you need to know about kiln dried wood to help you understand this process a bit better.
Kiln-dried wood is just what its name sounds like. A kiln is a specific type of oven that's been used for thousands of years. You may know it from its continued use with pottery. This method of drying out wood is faster than air drying, but there are many other components to the process that make it one of the most important steps in creating wood furniture.
Because wood absorbs moisture, there is a need to remove some of that moisture to help prevent the wood from breaking down. When placed in the wood, the green wood (which is wood that has not dried out yet) dries out, becoming more durable. This process is efficient and creates a highly durable and beautiful piece of lumber to use.
Many people talk about air drying lumber. However, there is a difference between this and the use of a kiln. Air dried lumber is a longer process that simply allows the air to dry out the wood. It may be beneficial for fencing and decking, but kiln dried wood is ideal for cabinetry, that live edge table you desire, and much more. This type of wood is less likely to cup or warp. It still allows the wood to retain its beautiful appearance.
The goal of kiln drying any product is to remove the moisture from it. If you imagine a piece of pottery that starts as clay, you can understand how the moisture within it makes the clay more flexible and soft. The same applies to wood. By placing it into the kiln, we can slowly and properly remove more of the moisture from it, which then allows the wood to become far more durable and stronger.
Moving the moisture to the surface of the lumber and then letting it into the atmosphere enables this to happen. It's done with controlled airflow as well as just the right amount of humidity and temperature. This allows the green timber to become more workable while also removing moisture that can lead to damage to the wood over the long term.
Kiln-dried wood is carefully dried out over a period of time. During that process, the moisture is pulled from the wood. It helps reduce the risk of fungal degradation that is common in wood. When dried at the ideal temperature, softwoods harden because the temperature reduces the resin that is in the wood.
When dried like this, the pieces become lighter in weight with less humidity. They become more durable while maintaining their overall beauty. In short, we believe this is a key part of the process of creating beautiful wood furniture.
Take a look at the breakdown of what happens during our process.
Trees are full of water. Because wood has moisture in it, we need to bring it down. The amount of moisture in green wood depends on many factors, but our goal is to get it down significantly.
The drying process begins in a closed chamber where the airflow, humidity level, and temperature can be maintained to bring down the moisture level. Once we receive the wood, we place it in a stack called a boule. It remains there for six months for the start of the drying process. Once 70% of the water has evaporated from the wood, we move it on.
Once the water in the wood has dropped, we will then place the stack in a kiln. Over a very slow process that takes weeks, it will dry out until it reaches the desired moisture content level.
During this timeframe, the wood will change. There will be shrinkage and swelling. When the wood reaches 15% moisture content, it has reached about half the possible shrinkage and about 4/5 of the possible swelling.
There are a few different methods used for drying out timber. If you are planning to buy a solid wood table, you’ll want to know which method was used.
Most of the time, kiln drying is done with conventional and dehumidification kilns. The process involves drying out wood that is placed within a chamber. There, the air circulation and relative humidity, and temperature levels help to reduce the amount of moisture within the wood. This can be done until the desired moisture content is reached. There are several styles of kilns to know.
These are the most commonly used option for wood products because they have continuous recycling of heat in the kiln. It does not discharge that heat from outside of the kiln as conventional kilns do.
In this type of kiln, there is limited drying capacity within the chamber. This method provides a very high-drying speed, which is why it is sometimes used, but it limited in its success for thick slabs and some other cuts.
Most kilns use electricity, but some use solar power. That’s an added benefit to the planet, but it doesn’t get hot enough to sterilize the wood.
The types of woods used in this process will vary significantly. It also influences the overall outcome. Here is a look at some of the types of woods commonly used in this process.
Hardwoods can be placed in kilns without a problem. That includes oak, ash, maple, polar, and birch, among others.
Softwoods are often from trees that have needles rather than leaves. These woods are much softer overall. They will fire faster and dry out quicker. Pines are a common example of softwoods.
Once the tree is felled, the next step is to bring it to our location. There, we will seal the ends of logs and mill it into slabs or quarter sawn lumber. The wood sits in our location for at least six months as it drops to a lower moisture level. Once that happens, it will spend several weeks in a kiln as it dries out and reaches its desired goal.
It takes time for the wood to reach the desired level, and there is no rushing that process. Once it reaches the correct moisture level, we then need to plane it into the proper dimensions. It is then graded for use.
Once the wood reaches the desired level of moisture, it is then placed in our barn to reacclimatize. This is done to allow the wood to absorb the moisture in the area. That takes some time. If you were to put hardwood floors into your home, this process is necessary. It needs to sit in place to reach the humidity level within that space. This helps to minimize the risk of damage to the wood once it is being worked.
We seal the ends of logs when we receive them as our first step. We then stack and sticker them for airflow. Our goal is to air dry hardwoods until they reach 30% moisture. We then use a dehumidification kiln to bring the wood to below 10% moisture. Because Alabama is so humid, that might go back up to 12% when it lives in our covered wood barn.
Our careful and slow process helps distinguish us from similar businesses that may not use kiln drying or air drying. When you purchase wood furniture or kiln dried slabs, you need this high-quality process that takes time and gets superior results.
Take the time to learn more about our process. If you are looking for the very best in wood products, you want Alabama Sawyer.

What is the most durable outdoor wood finish then? Take into consideration a few key things before you decide.
Wood is a natural product, which means the elements work to break it down. Sun, rain, humidity, seasonal abandonment, and more all impact the quality of the wood and the way it looks. No wood, not even teak or imported tropical woods, can withstand ongoing abuse from the elements. Those elements include the wild pool parties that often splash chlorine on the surface.
When buying outdoor wood furniture, then, it is critical to start with a durable wood species that can provide the very best foundation of protection. Look for wood species that are good at managing most elements.
Then, you need to work to add an exterior grade finish that can handle the conditions. There are options for wood furniture finish, and many of them can be a beautiful way to protect surfaces. We'll get into more of this in a moment.
Even with the right wood and the best finish for it, though, you still have to maintain the furniture. At least one time a year, you'll need to determine what type of maintenance the furniture needs and apply protection to it.
Choosing the best finish for wood takes careful consideration of the amount of durability needed. Most often, as outdoor furniture, you’ll need to have a high level of protection in place. The two biggest factors you need to work against are moisture and UV light. Here are some factors to keep in mi
Exterior oil is the simplest and the fastest way to treat most types of outdoor furniture. It applies in moments and typically does a good overall job. However, it only lasts about a year. These oils do not provide a top layer of protection like other products, which means that the oil seeps into the wood fibers and dries.
Penetrating oil like this works well to create a bit of protection, such as for something that sits on your deck covered. However, for those pieces that will be under constant exposure to the elements, it may not be the best choice.
Another option that provides a higher quality of protection is exterior varnish or urethane. This helps to create a protective layer that covers the wood itself. This adds far more durability because it works to protect the wood itself. These finishes are typically designed to protect against both the problem factors of moisture and UV rays. They are not any more difficult to apply, though they will still need to be reapplied every 1 to 3 years.
We are passionate about our wood products. That is why we use the very best finishes to create the beautiful look you want but also the long-lasting beauty you need.
Most often, we use exterior wood oil finishes when they are requested. However, our default solution is to use exterior urethane. If you are unsure what type of finishes you could expect on any product, be sure to ask our team for more information.
Consider for a moment that the best and more durable finishes are boat finishes. Keep in mind we do not use boat finishes on our wooden furniture. However, these products are enduring the most extreme environments possible. Even these products have to be refreshed and maintained regularly. Why do we mention this? In short, wood requires attention. It is not a surface that can be tossed out onto the deck and is expected to not need any attention to last for years to come. Protecting your exterior wood finishes on a regular basis makes the most out of every investment you make.
Boat finishes are highly durable. As you can imagine, the water, UV rays, humidity, and even the salt in the water, depending on where it is, all play a role in damaging wood furniture. These products are highly durable because they provide a protective layer over the top of the furniture, which helps to provide the highest level of protection. These are higher costing products but can still be an excellent option for boat surfaces, though not so much for outdoor furniture.
When it comes to choosing the right product for your needs, consider a simple pros and cons.
When it comes to durability, exterior varnish and urethane are going to be the best choice. These will typically last several years longer than what you could expect from traditional oil products. More so, they work better at protecting the wood from difficult conditions such as moisture and UV light.
When it comes to maintenance, both products are easy to put on, with urethane requiring a bit more attention. However, you will notice that these products require reapplication more often, and some do not provide a full year of protection for you.
How do you protect your outdoor furniture, then? Here are our recommendations for the best overall results.
First and foremost, ensure the wood is sealed. No matter which product you decide to use, look for those that can seal out water exposure. This is important in any climate where there's humidity but also significant rain or snow.
If you keep your furniture in the same position on a constant basis, the UV light will damage it in an uneven pattern. There really is no way to overcome that without significant updates to the varnish. For that reason, be sure to place your furniture in different positions and be sure to rotate this often.
When not in use, cover your wood furniture. If you know the weather is going to be bad for a few days with high humidity or perhaps a lot of rain, cover the furniture with some type of moisture-resistant covering (look for furniture covers specially designed for this).
Furniture like this is made to be used, and we encourage you to do so. However, take the steps necessary to keep it clean. Wipe it down with dish soap and a towel to remove surface damage. Avoid the use of chemicals, though. Be sure to keep any type of chlorine or pool chemicals out of the way as well.
Pay attention to your pieces. If your beam bench has damage to it, that may mean you need to reseal it. If you notice that your wooden table has a chalky feel to it, that often means it needs to be updated with new sealing.
If you are planning to use an exterior wood oil finish, you will need to scuff down the surface (follow the manufacturer’s instructions here) and then work to reapply the oil to it. Again, follow the oil manufacturer’s directions for use pretty closely to get the results you want and need.
For those who are using urethane for their finish, you will also need to scuff sand the wood just enough to remove the remaining material from the surface. Then, reapply the urethane to it. Purchase a higher quality product and be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for use.
Only purchase oils and varnishes that are made for the type of wood you have. When you buy products from us, be sure to talk to us about the proper maintenance for the piece. We believe that wood deserves that extra bit of attention, and providing that can give your wood the best chance at looking its best for years to come.
Whether you follow the Shou Sugi Ban method of protecting wood, which is an ancient Japanese architectural method to preserve wood through charring, or you use one of these products, we highly encourage you to pay close attention to the wood you bring into your home. These are valuable pieces that can be cared for well enough that you can pass them on for generations and love the way they look throughout that time. Every time you take the time to protect your outdoor wood furniture, you are helping that wood to go further, and that's great for the environment, too.

Tree experts often refer to hackberry as one tough tree. Unlike other species of trees that prefer specific soil or temperature, hackberry can grow in different conditions but prefers sandy loams to clay soils. It thrives in dry, wet, and well-drained soils. Hackberry can grow 50-70ft tall.
How to recognize hackberry wood? Well, it has light brown to grey heartwood while the sapwood is yellowish. Generally speaking, hackberry wood resembles ash. This wood usually has a straight grain, but it can be interlocked sometimes. The texture is coarse and very uneven. Just like elm trees, hackberry responds well to steam-bending, and it stains, glues, and finishes well.
The main benefits of hackberry wood are:
In terms of interior design, hackberry wood is used primarily for veneers, furniture, bent parts, and turned objects. The straight grain delivers a uniform appearance. It can be used for tables and chairs, for example. Hackberry wood is also good for cabinets.
Hackberry fun facts:
A simple wood bread box may not seem like a big deal. However, there are a few good reasons why you may want to have one in your kitchen.
Keep counters uncluttered
One of the best reasons to use a bread box is to keep things like loaves of bread off your countertops. For a clean, sophisticated look in your kitchen, you need clear countertops. Adding a bread box makes that possible.
Keep loaves fresh
The most common reason to buy a bread box is that you want to keep your loaves fresh. There's nothing quite like a loaf of crusty bread, but that freshness does not last long. In a modern wood bread box, there's less air circulating, which helps keep the bread soft longer.
If you want to give someone something that is truly memorable and valuable for their wedding or as a housewarming gift, a wood bread box may be one of the best choices out there. It may seem simple, but it is certainly unique and a valuable addition (that’s functional too!) to their kitchen.
Once you've decided to purchase a bread box, the next step is choosing one. To do that, you'll want to consider several key features of them based on what looks great and functions well in your space.
Dimensions
The typical store-bought loaf of bread measures around 8 to 10-inches in length and about 4 inches in width. If you typically purchase more than one loaf or enjoy making your own shapes and styles, you’ll need to think about these factors before you purchase a bread box. You don’t want them too crowded in this space.
Design
Look around your kitchen. Are there colors or designs that hold true to all of your countertop items? If so, then you’ll want to try to match that. Consider things like the type of wood used, the color, and any detailing added to them.
Material
It’s possible to buy a bread box in a wide range of styles. A traditional and rustic option is to purchase a wood bread box, perhaps made from walnut or another beautiful wood. The materials are important – you want it to be beautiful and elegant but also resistant to moisture and sustainable when possible.
It's easy to store bread in a bread box. You just need to place it into the box and close the lid. You can leave it in the plastic it comes in, or especially in dry areas, you can leave it exposed to the air. That may cause it to dry out a bit more. Wrap it in a light tea towel for a bit more protection from the environment.
Depending on the quality and type of finish, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, keep it clean and dry. Wipe it out consistently to keep any crumbs from settling on the wood for a long period of time. If it is made of a high-quality wood, you may need to apply a wood oil to the grain to keep it looking beautiful. If you need to wash it, use a mild soap and handwash it. Ensure it dries thoroughly.
The Modern Walnut Wood Bread Box from Alabama Sawyer is perhaps the best choice for any countertop. This beautiful, rich finish works well in any modern or rustic space. This artisan piece is also eco-friendly and offers exceptional craftsmanship. The lid is flush and can be removed to use as a cutting board if you like. There's enough airflow to keep bread fresh and dry but not exposed. Made from urban trees, it is a stunning piece of wood workmanship that’s impossible to find anywhere else.
You can almost smell it! Walking into your kitchen and getting a big whiff of fresh bread is an excellent way to start any day. Here are a few recipes to keep in mind to ensure you get that feeling every day.

Material
Several floating shelves are available in various materials. Wood tends to be the best choice for a natural and holistic look. However, the type of wood matters. Maple, oak, and others are options. Look a bit closer, though. Look for those that come from urban wood sources. That means the piece is more eco-friendly than others. Urban wood can be just as stunning but offers a bit more character and charm to the space.
Weight capacity
Prior to purchasing a wood shelf, be sure to understand both the size (measure out the size on the wall you plan to place it) and the weight capacity. Very heavy items could topple down if the shelf is not strong enough for them.
They can be a bit harder to put up than a simple bracket shelf option. Yet, with a bit of precision and attention to detail, you’ll be able to place them and push them into place with ease. Often, the shelf will come with a template and directions to help you ensure this happens as easily as possible.
As you think about buying floating shelves for your space, determine what you plan to put on them before you buy. That way, you know the proper dimensions for your space and how many you’ll need. Here are some ways to use them.

Do you have an empty wall in your office or bedroom? Perhaps you have a corner area in the living room that just does not have a purpose. You don't want it to just look boring and dull. Shelves like these allow you to add special items to display, adding depth of character in those areas.
Make a statement wall
Consider a long column of shelves, one on top of the other, along a wall in your room. This creates a bold statement, something that adds architectural beauty to your home as well. Fill it with everything that is important to you.
Utilize every space
You can use floating shelves just about anywhere you want to use them. That could mean over a mantel, in the kitchen over a countertop, as well as any other open area in your home. Turn that empty, boring wall into a functional and beautiful space.
Display your favorite books
One of the easiest ways to use floating shelves is to display books. You can place all of your favorite leather-bound books along beautiful, live edge floating shelves to create a truly stunning look in an office space. Use them in any room of your home to display the books that mean a lot to you.

If you have a nook in your dining room or kitchen with enough room, a small or medium-sized shelf can add a lot of functional space while also dressing up the area a bit. You’ll love the sophisticated feel of these pieces.
Bedside tables
Do you wish you had a space to put your phone at night without having a full table in the way? Use a live edge floating shelf. This adds a lot of fabulous character and function to your bedroom without adding a lot of clutter to it.
When it comes to making floating shelves work in your space, be creative. You don’t have to stuff them full of items as that just creates clutter. Instead, use shelves like this as a foundation for a few important and beautiful pieces. That way, each piece stands out on its own.
No matter where you use them, floating shelves can become more prominent when you choose the right color for them. If you want them to blend in, use a softer color or even an off white. If you want to make a statement, use a dark color and enable the grain to stand out.

Red elm has a straight grain and coarse or uneven texture. Like other oak wood, this one responds well to steam-bending, and it stains, glues, and finishes quite well.
The main benefits of red oak are:
Since it’s heavy, stiff, and hard with high shock resistance, red oak is a popular interior design material. It is primarily used for flooring but also interior joinery, decorative veneers, crates, boxes, wall paneling, cabinetry, and other pieces of furniture.

Imagine sitting in your home with your family at a table. What does it need to provide? Your initial considerations may be things like the number of seats it offers and the type of space it provides.
Do you like the elegances of a modern dining table, perhaps one that fits in with the cabinetry and look of the rest of your kitchen or dining space? You may be looking to make the most out of a tight space. In this situation, a pedestal dining table could be the ideal solution.
Think about the way that a table would fit into your space, including the layout of the room. You may want to consider the type of tasks you'll do at that table besides eating dinner, such as enjoying family games or entertaining large groups. Think about the way you will use this space, as well as the overall look and feel of your dining room and home overall.
To choose the best table for your space, there are numerous factors to think about, including the style you like, the shape, the coloring, and even the material it is made out of. Take a closer look at some key points to consider before you decide to buy.
Use your measuring tape
Size is one of the most important factors to think about when it comes to dining room tables. It is important to have a table that is large enough for your entire family. At the same time, the table needs to fit into the space you have for it. A table that is too big does not allow people to walk around and sit at it easily. It may make it hard for you to use other features in the room, such as desks or buffet tables.
While you need a size that fits your family, it may be necessary to choose based on the available space. Get out the measuring tape and mark off the amount of space you wish to dedicate to the dining table. Then, shop with confidence.
Consider your needs before settling on a shape
The shape of the table matters not just for style needs but also based on the way you wish to use that space and size limitations. A round dining table allows for fewer people but may fit into a tighter corner of your kitchen with ease. Round tables also create more intimate spaces that may make sharing easier.
On the other hand, not all dining tables have to be small. Large, formal dining tables that welcome large groups to your home can be perfect for larger gatherings. They also create a sense of elegance, depending on the type you select.
Chose the right table materials for your style
One of the things many people do not think much about when they are initially shopping for dining tables is the materials included. The materials of the table should be high quality so that the table lasts for years to come. You want to see thick tabletops with larger legs or a design that is structurally strong and durable. You can invest in metal and other options as well, especially if you are looking for stronger tables with a more modern feel.
A sustainable option is perhaps one of the best choices for many people. These tables come from wood that’s eco-friendly. They also do not use harmful chemicals and finishes that could expose your family to toxins. If you are considering a sustainable table, here’s what to look for.
Materials
There are a lot of material options available. For those looking for an eco-friendly dining table, seek out options that offer:
Zero-VOC or Low-VOC Finishes
VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are dangerous, and you do not want to see them on the finishes on the tables you buy. VOCs create eye, nose, and throat irritation, damage the kidneys, liver, and central nervous system, and have suspected carcinogens in them.
Look for a table that does not include these types of dangers. You will find many providers offer zero-VOC and low-VOC finishes that do not take away from the beauty of the dining table.
In addition to all this, before you decide on the dining table for your home, be sure it is made well. Get some reviews of the table, when possible, to get a good idea of what other customers who have already bought the table have to say. You may also want to check out the overall design. Is it made to hold the weight you'll need for it? Does it come with any type of guarantee of its workmanship and overall quality?
Buying from a trusted resource is one of the best ways to safeguard this purchase. If you are looking for a dining room table that fits your needs but also keeps your family safe, check out the sustainable options on the market today.

Home design is essential when owning a house; furniture speaks a lot about your personality and the mood you want to set. Buying furniture can sometimes be tricky, and you might want to do something special for your house.
Everybody loves a good DIY, right? DIY projects save you money and are a great way to develop your creativity. However, sometimes taking up a project like that can be a bit of a hassle if you do not know where to start or if you don’t have the right tools.
We have gathered the best tips from furniture design and crafting experts to help you get started with your DIY furniture projects—from DIY dining tables and chairs and wrapping up with how to restore your antique furniture or repurpose a worn-out sofa or carpet.
What are the most common wood species used to create furniture?
How to increase your home’s curb appeal on a budget and what furniture would that include?
Always mindful of a budget, the least expensive way to increase curb appeal is to tidy up the flower beds and add a pop of color. But another often missing element is adding a seating area to the front of your home. Of course, a front porch with a couple of chairs is so inviting, but what if you don’t have a large porch? If that’s the case, create a seating area under a tree or add a small courtyard with seating. And to keep it on budget, search for quality outdoor furniture pieces at yard sales, online classifieds and Facebook marketplace. These are great resources! And most often these pieces just need a little cleaning and a coat of paint. Which is always easy on the budget.

What are the different paint finishes to use for different furniture types?
There are endless options when deciding the right paint finish for your furniture. You can choose one of the ‘all-in-one’ paints which are available in semi-gloss, gloss, or satin finishes. Or go with a chalk paint, milk paint, or mineral paint, which usually come in a matte finish. These need either a wax finish, for furniture in low traffic areas, or a polyacrylic/polyurethane clear finish, for furniture in higher traffic areas such as tabletops, chairs, etc. Wax can be buffed to any sheen you desire, and poly is available in semi-gloss, gloss, satin, or matte finishes.

How to know you are decorating and purchasing furniture sustainably?
Everyone wants to feel good about the things they have in their homes. You want your furniture and decor to be a reflection of not only your style but also your values. When purchasing furnishings, you should feel comfortable asking where they came from, what they are made of, how they were made and by whom. Green certifications are one indicator of sustainability but they are not infallible. It is often more important to just buy locally or at least American made. That way you can feel confident your furniture was made in compliance with USA standards for health, safety and the environment.

What is the best way to protect and maintain the longevity of your furniture pieces? (For example, tables and sofas).
Although marble tables are resilient, cracks and pits will happen. Ensure the longevity of your table by sealing it every month with an acid-resistant impregnator sealer—one that isn’t citrus- or linseed oil-based. Before you seal the table, clean it first with soap and water. Apply two coats of sealer, waiting five minutes between applications and removing any excess sealer each time.

What are the best products to take care of your leather furniture and how to make it last?
Leather upholstery, much like our own skin, is at its best when supple and well moisturized. Keeping the finish clean is a good start – debris left to collect can scratch and damage some finishes. We recommend regularly wiping over the furniture with a damp cloth. Areas of stubborn greasy grime can be treated with a commercial leather cleaner or a home-made simple version (there are plenty of these recipes available online). Once the surface is clean and dry, apply Gilly’s Leather Care, massaging it into the leather as you work your way over the upholstery. Caring for your leather upholstery prevents cracking and splitting, which can occur over time if neglected, particularly in regions of high heat and low humidity. Regular cleaning also keeps a check on mold in humid regions.

What are the DIY furniture trends of 2022?
For starters, we’re seeing a lot more “hacks.” People are becoming more and more creative with their DIY projects, and they’re not afraid to experiment with different techniques. This means that we’re likely to see a lot of DIY furniture that features unique details and interesting design elements.
Another big trend that we’re likely to see in DIY furniture is an increased focus on sustainability. As people become more conscious of the impact of their consumption habits on the environment, they’re going to be looking for ways to reduce their footprint. With the rise of eco-friendly design and green living, it’s not surprising that more people are turning to sustainable materials for their home décor.
Finally, we’re likely to see a lot more DIY that’s inspired by traditional designs. We are increasingly seeing people interested in connecting with their heritage and they want to incorporate traditional elements into their homes. In recent years, modern mass-produced furniture and homewares have become the norm, leaving many people yearning for something more authentic and unique. That’s where the DIY trend comes in. By upcycling their furniture and homewares, people are able to create pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind and that reflect their personal style and background.
So, get ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into some DIY! We’ve given you a few ideas to get started, but the possibilities are endless. Just remember to have fun with it and go with your gut instinct. We can’t wait to see what amazing things you create.

What outdoor DIY projects could you recommend to turn your backyard into a place everyone wants to spend time at?
Whether you’re throwing an impromptu garden party or simply creating a permanent outdoor oasis to relax with friends and family, garden accessories are a must. Items such as lanterns, pot plants, tea lights and textiles can all go a long way in helping you to create a stunning backyard area and better still, they are relatively inexpensive. Add in some garden furniture and some faux plants or real foliage and everyone will want to spend time in your outdoor space.
There are a number of essential items of garden furniture to consider. First, an egg chair if space is limited or if you have a large garden, a full lounge garden set with sun loungers or a garden table and chairs. An outdoor set can include chairs, a table and sometimes even an ice cooler for those warm summer days or a fire pit for those cooler winter nights. Gather a few ingredients in advance and host an outdoor DIY s’mores party. Alternatively, you could keep all your refreshments cool on scorching hot days.

What is the best DIY furniture when buying a new home, and which one should you buy from professionals?
Most people buying a new home are on budget when it comes to furnishing it. To save money, we’d always recommend checking out places like Facebook marketplace, Gumtree or Craigslist for second hand furniture first. You can get some fantastic items for very reasonable prices that can be used as is or upcycled. You may also consider building your own furniture; especially if the item is simple (like shelving units or wooden chairs).
However, for any furniture that will be used frequently or that you need to stand the test of time, we’d recommend buying from a professional. Examples of such furniture include dining tables or TV cabinets because greater weights and pressures are often exerted on them and they are more frequently used.

What are the essential tools everyone who would like to start with DIY furniture would need?
DIY tools could range from hand tools and maybe a drill that will fit in a tool box, to a more highly equipped shop with table saw, router/molder, jointer. What you need depends on your ambition- what do you dream of making?
A Hand-Tool Shop might consist of a hand-saw for crosscutting lumber, hand plane, chisels of varying widths, maybe a jig saw for cutting patterns in wood, a putty knife for glazing, claw hammer for assembling lumber or framing, and a tack hammer for brads and upholstering, screw drivers of your preferred types, and a drill, a Yankee drill with bits if you are a purist that lives off the grid, or an electric drill with various sized drill bits, including a set of hole saws and Forstner bits for larger size holes. A wood rasp, and steel file are excellent tools. Maybe you have room in the toolbox for a sanding machine, that makes fabrication considerably easier. And a flexible tempered tool steel hand scraper, if you are really serious about making fine cabinetry.
One of the most useful tools there are- but be prepared to spend considerable time learning to sharpen it by raising a beaded edge on it- you can feel the edge, but it is too fine to see. The proof of a shaper’s quality is in the use of it. If you are into timber projects, you will also need an adze, a broad axe, and lumberman’s board saw (2-man affair), and veneer saw. Most of the finest cabinetry ever made, starting from the ancient Egyptians, through the first quarter of the 19th century, was made entirely with hand tools, none of it electrified. So don’t think the above tools are not enough to do anything!

How to repurpose common furniture pieces to give them new life?
Speaking specifically on case goods (bedroom and dining), If the piece is made of real wood (and not particleboard or MDF covered with a veneer or paper) it will have a longer lifespan and can be re-finished into something totally different in terms of look and style, there are tons of great tutorial videos online on how to re-finish wood furniture, they basically consist on sanding and applying new coating(s), which can be solid colors, stains, multi-layer patinas for aging. Some are simple and some require some equipment and skills.
If you are new in wood works, always best to test on some wood boards before jumping into a more complex piece of furniture.
Also, changing the hardware for drawers and doors can give a totally new look to a piece of furniture.

What is the best material and refinishing to use when making your own cabinets?
There are a few different options when it comes to materials and finishes for cabinets. If you’re looking for a natural finish, wood is always a good option. For something more modern, laminate or metal may be a better fit. And if you’re looking for an easy to care for surface, glass or acrylic might be the way to go.
When it comes to cabinet refinishing, the sky is really the limit. You can sand and stain or paint your cabinets any color you like.
If you’re feeling really creative, you can even add detailing or patterning. The most important thing is to make sure that the finish is durable and will stand up to wear and tear over time.

How to play with materials to create your own furniture pieces?
We feel that the greatest way to design any piece of furniture is to keep to the inspiration’s essence. This way, no matter how many interpretations the piece gets, the inspiration remains recognized, especially in the context of furniture design. Creating an iconic piece of furniture is challenging and needs meticulous attention to detail. It is important to consider its functionality while working on its design, which might influence the design’s overall concept. A marriage of design and function is required for a piece of furniture to be deemed a success.
Playing with materials can be overwhelmed. Thus, between choosing wood or marble, velvet or leather, and glass or mirror, the key-question is: What is my style? Only then, we will be able to design the best fit.
What are the best materials to play with when it comes to furniture design projects?
It’s a giant world when it comes to furniture materials. A material that never fails to impress is a well-crafted and polished wood, which beautifies any space where this piece is placed. However, we also admit that we have a special taste in working with stones, especially marbles. Marble and wood when combined have a fantastic result and will undoubtedly be the subject of conversation on their own.
